At Meadowbrook Dental Care, we are dedicated to giving our patients a beautiful and healthy smile. If you have a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth, dental implants may be what you need to regain your confidence in your smile. A dental implant is a fixture that is permanently attached to the bone of the jaw where a tooth is missing. An implant’s primary job is to act as the foundation for a replacement tooth, giving you the structure necessary for your teeth. Dental implants allow you to regain the ability of using the new tooth as if it was your natural tooth.
Dental implants are titanium screws that anchor into the jawbone and act as roots. The artificial tooth is then placed into the anchor. The implant usually requires a few surgical procedures to be fully implemented. After the first procedure where the implant is placed, it remains under the surface of the gum to better bond with the surrounding bone and tissue. When the area has healed, either a crown, bridge, or denture will be attached to it. Treatment can be finished in 3-5 visits over a period of about 4-12 months. Once we are sure you have completely healed, our staff creates artificial teeth that fit your mouth best. We do this by making impressions of your mouth. The process of dental implants will not interrupt daily life. If you are missing multiple teeth, a series of implants can be done at one time. Implants are preferred to bridges because they can improve your bite without damaging neighboring teeth.
Placement of an implant may involve a procedure known as bone grafting, which is often performed by an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon. When teeth and roots are not attached to the jawbone, the bone loses purpose and reabsorbs over time. This is when bone grafting becomes necessary. Taking bone from another part of the body and replacing part of the jawbone will allow the dental implant to securely stay in place.
For patients who wear dentures, we offer mini dental implants (MDIs) as an alternative to standard implants. MDIs are minimally invasive and allow for immediate and long-term stabilization of dentures. Mini dental implants require smaller titanium screws and little recovery time. Unlike dental implants, mini dental implants have less healing time between the actual implant and the insertion of the artificial tooth.
Following the procedure, we will work with you to make sure you receive the best dental care plan for your Dental Implants. We recommend brushing and flossing regularly to ensure optimum implant functionality.
