Mouth Guards (or occlusal guards) are coverings placed over teeth to prevent any oral or sports related damage. At Meadowbrook Dental Care, Miguel A. Casañas Jr., DDS, and Publio Silfa, DDS, are both experienced in creating custom mouthguards at their Mineola, New York, office. Mouth Guards differ based on the patient’s needs and teeth structure.
If you play sports we recommend wearing a Mouth Guard, especially if it is a contact sport. Any injury to the mouth, including concussion, can be lessened with Mouth Guards. If you or your child wears braces, Mouth Guards can be fitted around it. An injury while having braces on can cause even more damage. Or, as mentioned earlier, if you grind your teeth, Mouth Guards stop the grinding and other leading damage. Mouth Guards can also relieve Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ) and prevent excessive snoring.
Stock Mouth Protectors
These are ready-to-wear Mouth Guards that can be purchased in stores. However, at Meadowbrook Dental Care we do not recommend wearing Stock Mouth Protectors. These Mouth Guards are one sized with little to no room for adjustment. Stock Mouth Protectors can also make it difficult to breathe due to the bulky fit.
Boil and Bite Mouth Protectors
These Mouth Guards are more efficient than Stock Mouth Protectors. The “boil and bite” method works by first boiling the Mouth Guard, and then placing the thermoplastic material in your mouth to mold your teeth. Applying pressure conforms the mold to fit more tightly. The shape provides a better fit, but when in sporting events, it may not provide enough protection.
Custom-fitted Mouth Protectors
At Meadowbrook Dental Care, we provide services to create a custom-fitted Mouth Guard. This involves creating a mold of your teeth and using the mold to recreate the shape of your teeth using special material. This type of Mouth Guard provides the most protection and comfort because it is designed just for you.
There is special Custom-fitted Mouth Guard is specifically designed for those who grind their teeth while they are sleeping. Our staff can make a Nocturnal Bite Plate or Bite Splint Mouth Guard so you won’t grind your teeth while you sleep. It is specifically designed to give you comfort while you sleep and prevent you from grinding your teeth and causing further damage.
Normally, Mouth Guards are made for the upper teeth, but if necessary, we can create lower teeth Mouth Guards.
To keep your mouth and Mouth Guard clean be sure to take our advice and care for your Mouth Guard:
