Root Canal Q & A

Meadowbrook Dental Care

What is a root canal?

When the pulp in the center of your tooth becomes infected or abscessed, an endodontist must remove it before it leads to further complications. Instead of pulling your tooth, leaving an unattractive gap and a lack of support to nearby teeth, Dr. Casañas and Dr. Silfa often recommend a root canal.

Removing the infected pulp and replacing it with a filler can eliminate any infections and inflammation, reduce pain, and restore tooth function.

What happens during a root canal?

At Meadowbrook Dental Care, the dentists perform one-day painless root canals. To begin the procedure, Dr. Casañas or Dr. Silfa numbs the area around your infected tooth and uses a dental dam to separate it from the rest of your mouth. Doing so protects it from saliva and other germs.

Once your tooth and gums are numb, your dentist makes an opening at the top of your tooth, where they remove the infected pulp, both from the center of the tooth and down the root.

After cleaning the area, Dr. Casañas or Dr. Silfa replaces the pulp with a biocompatible, rubber-like substance called gutta percha. In some cases, a metal post may be placed in the root to provide support and structure for your tooth.

Once they complete the process, either a filling and bonding agent or a crown restores your tooth’s function.

How do you know if a root canal is the best option for you?

If you have an infected tooth, Dr. Casañas and Dr. Silfa may take X-rays to determine if they can save your tooth. If so, they may recommend a root canal.

A safe and effective procedure, a root canal provides a variety of benefits. These treatments are over 95% effective and can last a lifetime if you care for them properly.

Root canals are designed to eliminate any pain associated with tooth infections and abscesses, as well as restore function to your tooth. That includes allowing you to:

  • Chew normally
  • Bite with force
  • Protect your other teeth
